Superbroccoli

by Citation News Editor 9. November 2011

Scientists in the UK, led by Richard Mithen of the Institute for Food Research, have developed a "super broccoli." The broccoli, a cross-breed between the standard British species and a wild Sicilian variety, contains two to three times the amount of glucoraphanin than normal broccoli. Glucoraphanin, a chemical compound found in most plants, helps break down fats and cholesterol in the bloodstream. Many scientists also believe the chemical contains the key to preventative measures against cancer and serious heart disease. The super broccoli remains a more expensive vegetable however, with a limited release in California and Texas.
